Amazon was selling fake pet meds, manufacturer says
Pet King Brands, which makes ZYMOX, a popular over-the-counter hydrocortisone ear solution for pets, announced late last week that it had discovered counterfeit “Zymox” products on Amazon. Pet King Brands says it was “able to detect the counterfeit products through its quality and safety enforcement program.”
“These products were not manufactured by Pet King Brands nor supplied directly to Amazon by Pet King Brands,” the PKB announcement said.
The Canine Review has reached out to Amazon’s press office for comment with questions regarding Amazon’s product safety and enforcement protocols currently in place at Amazon intended to prevent the sale of counterfeit medication; insights into how this occurred; the number of counterfeit zymox products sold; whether there have been any reports of illness(es) associated with Zymox-labeled products sold on Amazon in the past two years, and if Amazon has yet been able to determine the contents of the counterfeit Zymox products. We have also reached out to government regulators, pet owners, vets, and Pet King Brands, the manufacturer of Zymox.
More from the company news release: “Counterfeit products that have been identified so far as being sold by Amazon include: Zymox Otic Ear Solution with 1% Hydrocortisone, 1.25 fluid ounce, Zymox Otic Plus Ear Solution with 1% Hydrocortisone, 1.25 fluid ounce and Zymox Enzymatic Ear Solution with 0.5% Hydrocortisone, 1.25 fluid ounce.”
“Amazon as a business entity is not an approved authorized seller of Pet King Brand products,” PKB said in the release. “As a precautionary measure, Pet King Brands recommends consumers who have purchased one of the ZYMOX Ear products directly from Amazon and not from one of the authorized sellers on Amazon to immediately discontinue use and contact Pet King Brands with any questions regarding these products or any other ZYMOX products purchased directly from the Amazon storefront.”
