AKC Pet Insurance
Transparency Rating
Need to know:
- AKC Pet Insurance has no administrative relationship with the American Kennel Club apart from a licensing agreement: the AKC, the world’s largest registry of purebred dogs and breeders, founded in 1884, allows a private equity backed pet insurance conglomerate to use its deservedly prominent branding to sell pet insurance to new owners of purebred dogs when they register their new additions after arriving home from their breeders, thereby using the AKC’s deservedly prominent branding in exchange for licensing fees.
- JAB Holding Company, the private investment fund of Germany’s Reimann family, is the parent company of the parent company of AKC Pet Insurance. JAB now owns a staggering majority of the American pet insurance marketplace. Other properties in JAB’s portfolio include Embrace, ASPCA Pet Insurance, Spot Pet Insurance, Pumpkin Insurance, Hartville Pet Insurance, 24 Petprotect, Figo, and more.
- Consumers should understand that in addition to the fact that the insurance product has no administrative relationship with the AKC, its namesake, the product is a subsidiary of a massive private equity conglomerate; however, the administrative operations appear to occur within Independence Pet Group.
- Independence Pet Group’s leaders and communications staff have declined repeated requests for interviews regarding the AKC Pet Insurance marketing and messaging with respect to pre-existing conditions. We’ve issued detailed questions to drill down on the fine print of the policy, including whether questions about the fine print regarding pre-existing conditions as well cancel clauses.
