Adequan Injections Recalled For Possible Glass Fibers
If you have a senior dog with osteoarthritis, you may be familiar with Adequan. My Labrador, Nellie, who just turned 12, received her weekly Adequan injection on the morning of Tuesday, Aug. 4. I did not learn about the recall until early Wednesday, Aug. 5, and I do not know whether her dose came from a recalled lot. I have sent an urgent email — along with this story — to her veterinary team.
Adequan is an FDA-approved prescription medication used to manage symptoms of age-related joint disease and lameness in dogs and horses. According to the statement jointly released by the manufacturer and FDA, the manufacturer has not received any reports of adverse events associated with the recalled lots.
“The administration of an intramuscular injectable product containing particulate matter, such as glass fibers, may result in local irritation, swelling, inflammation, injection-site pain, infection or abscesses,” the announcement states. “To date, American Regent Inc. has not received any reports of adverse events related to the recalled lots.”
